A Little History

Polo for Palliative CareIt all started at Matey Nedkov’s birthday party.  Matey and Christopher Wright were taking up polo and as the evening went on, a group of friends (including Ian Carlsen, Phil Russel and Howard Flood) started to wonder about how they could turn their enjoyment of polo into a fund raising event.

Coincidentally, all were both members of The Toronto Commandery of The Order of Saint Lazarus, an ancient, international Order devoted, in Canada, to palliative care.  The Order had an annual ball in the spring called the Emerald Ball, so an Emerald Chukker, dedicated to supporting palliative care was named that night.

Polo for Palliative CareIn 1999, the first Emerald Chukker was held at Gormley Polo Field, with a little help from members of the Toronto Polo Club!  It was a success, and so was born an annual, volunteer driven event!

For the first few years, funds raised by the Emerald Chukker were distributed to various charities or programs in the Toronto area.

In 2004, members of The Toronto Commandery saw the growing societal need for hospice palliative care in Toronto. Its population was rising and aging and the number of end-of-life beds or services were in short supply.  The Toronto Commandery Hospice, Inc., a new corporation was formed to try to address this need by building a residential hospice that would be part of a Centre of Excellence to provide a number of services such as visiting hospice, residential hospice, bereavement and more.

Polo for Palliative CareWhile the name of the event started was the Emerald Chukker, which reflected The Order, from the beginning it was also referred to as Polo For Palliative Care to reflect its purpose.

Although started by members of The Order, many of the long time or episodal volunteers and most of the attendees of the event are not members of the Order, so while Emerald Chukker remains a bit of history, it is less emphasized today.  In 2015, the committees decided to re-brand the event as Black and White Polo, with all funds raised from sponsorship and donations to go to The Toronto Commandery Hospice.
